News23 November 2009 PYP UK Yog teacher - Supriya Kamat - profiled Supriya Kamat has been associated with the PYPT since 2006 when she became a Life Member.
During her visit to Haridwar, in April 2009, to attend the Yog Teachers' Part III course, she upgraded her membership to that of Patron Member and also became a member of the Bharat Swabhiman Trust. Over the past 25 years Supriya has volunteered her services to several renowned London and UK wide charities where she has continually helped in developing and promoting good health, social, cultural, and educational programmes within the local Asian and Black Ethnic communities. In 2008, Supriya's excellent work was rewarded by being awarded the Croydon Health Champion Certificate for her work in promoting good health and Healthy Life Style in Croydon Borough and consequently was invited to the Houses of Parliament to meet the then Health Secretary - Alan Johnson MP. Supriya is one of the contributors to Exeter University (North Wales) where complimentary and alternative medicinal research is being carried out by NHS Diabetes and Diabetes UK. Being a qualified Chartered Biochemist, and coming from an Ayurvedik Practitioner's family background, she provides her scientific knowledge and expertise to the university's senior researcher. Supriya has also been recognised for her continuous voluntary work for an endless list of charities, organisations and the disadvantaged communities (such as Age-Link, Age Concern London, Mind in Croydon, Rethink, South London and Maudsley, NHS, PCT, Croydon Voluntary Action, Maharashtra Mandal London). She was honoured by the Mayor of Croydon where he awarded Supriya a reward of £300 and a certificate for her valuable voluntary services during year 2008 at Fairfield Halls). She gets frequent official invites from the Mayor's office on several important occasions. The reward money is put towards other worthy causes during the year. Her charitable work streatches beyond the UK with her active involvement in the development, modernisation and uplifting of two remote villages - Rajwadi (District Ratnagiri) and Gharadi (District Raigarh) in West Maharashtra situated in interiors of Mumbai Goa Highway where she organises and participates in various fund raising activates to provide financial help for children with special needs. She and her family practise Yog & Pranayam religiously every morning while watching Swami Ramdevji on Aastha TV. Being a very keen yog teacher, she conducts 7 Yog classes during the week at Aashna House - ASRA old people's home, The Mental Health Institute in South London, a number of GP surgeries, Community Centres and even manages to make time for 1 to 1 tuition for those people are house-bound! Besides her career as a Financial Analyst, Supriya is a main carer for her disabled mother and helps in looking after her close friends and relatives on social and health related matters. Last, but by no means least, the name which will pass all our lips from now on "Pranyog" was Supriya's suggestion for the new name for PYPT. This has met with seal of approval by no lesser person than Swami Ramdevji himself - who has started using the name "Pranyog" in conjunction with the Patanjali Yog Peeth logo. When asked what her dream is, she said… "My dream is to bring good health, harmony, peace and religious cohesion in society". If you'd like to contact or help with any of the wonderful work carried out by Supriya, please do not hesitate to contact her directly on supriya187@hotmail.com Back to news list |
